Korean skincare is here to stay – and for good reason, as its heart lies in healthy, radiant, and well-hydrated skin, which so many people aspire to.
The lessons of Korean skincare can easily be applied to skincare at northern latitudes too. Maximum hydration, gentle yet effective cleansing, and regular sun protection are just as important in South Korea as they are in Finland!

Korean skincare aims for naturally glowing skin
As the name suggests, Korean skincare – or K-beauty – has its roots in South Korea, where beauty care has been part of holistic well-being for centuries. The ideal is hydrated, balanced, and naturally luminous skin.
Achieving radiant and glowing skin doesn't happen overnight – the core of Korean skincare is prevention. Well-hydrated skin, for example, stays supple and more resilient, while a steady SPF habit helps protect skin from premature aging and pigmentation changes.
The heart of Korean skincare is slowing down skin aging, maintaining an even skin tone, and keeping the skin barrier strong.
Popular and effective Korean skincare ingredients include green tea, centella asiatica (cica), niacinamide, ceramides, and snail secretion filtrate (snail mucin). In addition, hyaluronic acid, propolis, snail serum, rice water, aloe vera, as well as AHA and BHA acids frequently appear in Korean cosmetics.
Thanks to powerful ingredients and diverse formulas, Korean skincare offers solutions for all skin types! Whether you have acne-prone, aging, dry, or sensitive skin, K-beauty has you covered – just choose products based on your skin's needs!
What are the steps of Korean skincare?
While many people associate Korean skincare with the famous 10-step routine, you can absolutely do Korean skincare in a much simpler way! One of the great strengths of Korean skincare is that it's highly adaptable and flexible.
You can follow the full multi-step routine, or pick individual products to add to your existing skincare.
The cornerstones of a Korean skincare routine:
-
Cleansing — Double cleansing removes makeup, dirt, and impurities gently but effectively.
-
Hydration — Layering helps maximize and lock moisture into the skin.
-
Sun protection — Daily SPF protects skin from premature aging and pigmentation changes.
Korean skincare routine:
1. Double cleansing. First, the face is washed with an oil-based cleanser, which effectively but gently dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. The secret of an oil or balm cleanser is that it cleans thoroughly without drying out the skin.
In the second step of double cleansing, the face is washed again with a water-based cleanser, such as a cleansing foam, milk, or emulsion. This ensures no residue from the oil cleanser remains, and the skin is deeply cleansed.
2. Toner (face water). Toner is an essential hydrating product! It balances the skin's pH and allows subsequent products to absorb more effectively.
3. Essence is one of the most important products in Korean skincare. Slightly thicker than a toner, essence combines the best qualities of a toner and serum – in addition to hydrating, it can brighten, renew, or soothe the skin. Essence is best patted directly onto the skin with fingertips, without a cotton pad.
4. Serums and ampoules are intensive treatment products packed with a high concentration of active ingredients. Like essence, they absorb effectively and create a "glass skin" effect. Niacinamide, centella, and ceramide serums, for example, are star products in Korean skincare.
5. Eye cream ensures that the delicate skin around the eyes gets the care it deserves, as signs of aging appear more easily on this thinner skin area than elsewhere.
Tip: hydrating and refreshing eye patches work quick wonders for under-eye care!
5. Moisturizer protects the skin and seals in the hydration delivered by previous products. A gel moisturizer suits oily or combination skin, while a richer cream gives dry skin long-lasting moisture.
If your skin is very dry, you can finish your routine with a facial oil that locks in moisture effectively.
In the morning, you can replace your moisturizer with a sunscreen that combines both hydration and high sun protection.
6. Sunscreen is a must-have in Korean skincare! It's worth protecting your skin from the sun starting in early spring and continuing well into autumn, as UV exposure ages the skin insidiously.
Golden rule: apply products from thinnest to thickest. Toners and essences first, then serums, and finally creams and oils. 🌸
Add these Korean power products to your routine too:
-
Exfoliation: removes dead skin cells, brightens, and creates the base for radiant "glass skin." Use 1–2 times per week.
-
Targeted treatments: pimple patches, for example, are great for treating blemishes.
-
Hydrating and nourishing masks pamper the skin when it craves extra moisture, soothing, or a treat.
